Description

Long before we knew Indonesia as a nation, our ancestors had already explored the vastness of the ocean, built the majestic wonders of the world, and dominated the trade route of the world. Crafting, constructing, and building something out of boundless imagination has always been deeply ingrained in our DNA. The Oldblue Groundworks started as a project of a lifelong dream. It’s our way to preserve, to cherish, and to honor our great ancestors’ unwavering spirit. Through the only way we know how.

The Monsoon Selvedge is the pilot project of the Oldblue Groundworks. Something we started 7 years ago. The holy mission was to weave our own selvedge denim fabrics using our self-owned Toyoda shuttle loom(s) here in Indonesia. By doing so, we should be able to utilize more and more of our own domestic resources. There are too many easier ways, closer distances, and shorter times. But we believe that the way you pursue something can tell so much about your true self.

Why Monsoon? The Nusantara’s history couldn’t be separated with its maritime glory and legacy. We were once a highly respected nation hailed and celebrated by its maritime glory. A monsoon is a seasonal change in the direction of the prevailing winds of a region. Monsoons allowed our ancestors to take an important part in the world-wide’s seafaring and maritime trade. Beyond economic measure, monsoons allow culture and knowledge to go places.

The Monsoon Selvedge is a mid-weight 16 oz / sq. yds denim. We left it in its loom-state condition so you can experience the denim on the ‘rawest’ state possible. It’s constructed using indigo rope-dyed yarns. The yarns’ character falls into a more plain and classic kind of denim persona. Of course, the denim fabric itself is far from perfect. You can experience chatters and other minor defects here and there. And we’d like to embrace this thing as the beauty of progress. And by acquiring this denim article, you’d directly support our progress while being an integral part of our history.

Aside of the Indonesian-milled denim, we also tried to utilize other domestically made & sourced supporting materials here. The brass-made buttons and the copper-finished rivets were all developed and made locally here. They might be the 2nd longest development; aside of the denim fabric, of course. The cowhide we utilized for the leather patch was sourced locally. Natural vegetable tanned kind of leather. The beautiful indigo hickory pocket lining fabric was also sourced locally. that kind of blue is pretty perfect to symbolize the ocean waves, isn’t it? The sewing thread constructing the jean, well it’s not an Indonesian-labelled company. But at least they have a production factory here that makes the sewing thread we put to good use.
