In the high country of the Old West, any greenhorn with a shiny colt can fire off six rounds in a hurry. But the seasoned hand knows a simple truth: fast is fine, but accuracy is everything. Out on the range, the gear worth keeping isn’t whipped together overnight. A good saddle takes time to tool, a trusty trail-horse takes patience to break, and real heavy-duty denim cannot be rushed out the gate just to meet a clock’s ticking hand.
This jacket was supposed to ride into town alongside our #14THFANDANGO release. But we’ve been doing this long enough to know that a good thing doesn’t always need to be rushed out the door. Good work doesn’t always follow a calendar. Sometimes you simply have to let the dust settle before you know you’ve got something worth putting your name on.
And now, after taking the long way around, our Work Jacket Type III is finally here.
We reckon it was worth the wait.
THE FABRIC
Still saddled up with that heavy-hitting slub-banger from the masters at Kaihara Mills in Japan, this jacket is cut from the same untamed cloth as our 14th Fandango denim. We’re talking about the 19 Oz Thunderhoof. This loom-state, unsanforized selvedge denim is as wild as a bucking bronco.
Coarse, hairy, and unruly by nature. We left it in its purest form. No clever tricks, no unnecessary wash treatments, and absolutely no balderdash. It breaks in like a wild bronc; rough at first, but as the yarns reveal themselves through wear, it yields a character with visual depth that’s earned, not given.
THE DETAILS
We built this rig on the sturdy foundation of the 1930s denim jackets, then dragged it through our own rugged, Oldblue lens. The defining language here is in the curves. From the rounded collar to the sweeping front yoke that arches proudly across the chest, every line is deliberately shaped rather than simply squared off. We slapped on a single lower pocket with a flap closure to keep things purposeful, while the front pleats, fastened with our signature loop stitch give the jacket room to move without losing its structured armor.
And then there’s the secret you won’t see at first glance. Back in the day, cowboys added a fabric lining to give their denim an extra layer of protection against the biting prairie wind. Instead of a heavy, suffocating blanket, we lined the innards with a loosely woven, breathable fabric boasting a bold Navajo-inspired pattern. It naturally injects a heavy dose of Western attitude into the build. To hold it all together, we forged it with custom Scovill USA hardware, 100% copper washer-burr rivets, thick zinc-alloy doughnut top buttons with a burnt copper finish, and a locally made antique copper cinch-back.
THE FIT
We call it a Vintage Fit, and it respects its 1930s roots. It gives you the room to swing an axe, rope a calf, or just wrestle your way through the city streets without losing its sharp, structured character. The front pleats give your chest the mobility it needs, while the classic cinch-back lets you dial in the waist exactly how you like it.
And because this is 19 Oz unsanforized denim, remember that the jacket will change with wear and washing. It’ll start stiff. It’ll fight you a little. That’s part of the deal.
Stick with it and the jacket will eventually stop feeling like something you bought and start feeling like something that belongs to you.
